Racist Voters

--Cross posted with Facebook--

I believe everyone who exercises their right to vote should do so based on their conscience and research. I know I will.
However, do not for a minute presume that because I am Hispanic and a minority, I am required to vote a certain way. Moreover, whichever way I vote, do not accuse me of racism. Do not claim I would vote a certain way if skin color were different. You do not know me, and to claim I am racist makes you no better than the worst you assume of me.
People have been persecuted and died because of actual racism. People have suffered because of prejudice and have lost much because of it. To claim I am part of the opression because I ignore skin color in choosing a leader is offensive, patronizing, insulting, and immature.
After all, the great civil rights hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
That is exactly what I will do, without apology.
You may or may not agree, and that's fine. But to claim that I make ANY decision based on race is simply reprehensible.
