Did you mean to use non-jacketed bullets? I tried those early on and found they smoke too much and dirty the gun up pretty badly with lead residue, especially if you shoot a lot of rounds in a session.

That depends on the lead hardness, velocity, and lube. I've had to use a Lewis Lead Remover for some low-velocity .38 Special loads at one point, while simply swabbing out the same pistol with patches after shooting 200 rounds of my own reloads from the same revolver. Same for my 1911.

Short version: buy good quality cast bullets, and use appropriate loads.

I'm tied up for the holidays but I can't wait to get started. As far as leading, I'm with Mauser Medic. It seems like it all comes down to the load. I've checked the load data and I think I've identified a load that should work.
