You're Kidding, Right?!

I just had a conversation with one of my paralegals (she's 23) which went like this:

Me:  "That thing's like the IBM PC, everybody's copied it."

Paralegal: [Blank Stare] ... "What's an IBM PC?"


Am I that old already? I'm only 37!

Not old, just informed.

I've found the same problem with people of all ages - they simply do not know the history of common appliances.

I'm not talking about minute detailed history (And then in 1814, G.G. Gadget invented the bifurcating reduction gear)but simple -- Telegraph, Telephone, Radio, B & W Television, etc.

I think this stems from the increasing tendency to treat the historical as inferior and only the modern as truly relevant.
